The Bare Nails Era: Why I Chose Healing Over High-Maintenance Beauty
For the longest time, I believed that "self-care" meant a weekly trip to the nail salon. I’d sit in that chair, pick a color, and walk out with a fresh set of gels, feeling like I finally had my life together.
But behind the polish, my nails were struggling. They were
thin, brittle, and had that tell-tale yellow tint that appeared every time the
old color was stripped away.
The Comparison Trap
I’ll be honest: the pressure to keep up was real. At work, I
sit near a colleague who has her nails perfectly done every single week. For a
while, I felt a strange sense of guilt or inadequacy looking at my own
"unfinished" hands. I thought that to look professional and "put
together," I needed to follow that same cycle.
But eventually, I realized I was chasing an aesthetic at the
expense of my health. I didn't want "cool" nails anymore; I
wanted healthy ones.
Choosing "Slow" Beauty
This was the start of what I’m calling my Bare Nails
Era. It’s about more than just skipping the salon; it’s a commitment to:
- Non-toxic
living: Stepping away from harsh chemicals and giving my body a
break.
- Healing
from within: Focusing on strength and natural shine rather than
hiding damage under layers of gel.
- Romanticizing
the simple: Finding beauty in the ritual of a minimalist, clean
routine.
How I Started My Journey
The transition wasn't immediate, but the results have been
so rewarding. From the moment I
decided to stop the salon visits to the simple routine that finally made my
nails look healthy again.
A Note to You
If you’ve ever felt the pressure to keep up with a beauty trend that doesn't feel right for you, this is your sign to take a breath. Beauty doesn't have to be loud or high-maintenance. Sometimes, the most "put together" version of ourselves is the one that is simply well-rested and healthy.
With love and light,
