SINGAPORE DIARIES: FINDING STILLNESS IN THE RAIN
A gentle embrace of slow mornings, unexpected downpours, and the quiet comfort of routine.
Even when we are thousands of miles from home, there is a profound, grounding comfort in the quiet rituals that remain unchanged. My final days in Singapore began in the dim, peaceful light of our hotel room, long before the humid streets outside began to stir.
I. THE ANCHOR OF MORNING
There is something so sacred about the slow, untouchable hours of the early morning.
Slipping down to the hotel gym for a quiet workout has become my gentle way of anchoring myself—washing away the lingering travel fatigue, feeling fully present in my body before the day demands my attention. Returning to the room, I wrapped myself in a soft white robe and sat by the window. I let the familiar, comforting sound of a fresh espresso pouring fill the quiet space, breathing in the stillness before the vibrant, loud energy of the city took over.
Outfit details: A dark, flowing silhouette to match the moody sky. A simple tank top, a silk skirt, my everyday bag, and my favourite Aeyde flats.
II. A FORCED PAUSE
Stepping out into the heavy morning air, we intentionally sought out the slower corners of the city. We wandered into Fort Canning Park, a hidden, historical sanctuary right in the middle of the urban sprawl. Tracing the beautifully painted bark of the towering trees, the air felt thick with a deeply healing peace.
It was here, seeking a moment of rest at the Tiong Bahru Bakery nestled in the foothills, that the sky decided to open up.
We were gently trapped by a sudden, heavy downpour. Yet, there is something oddly comforting about being forced by nature to pause. For half an hour, there was nowhere else to be, nothing else to do but sit inside, tear into a perfectly flaky croissant, sip on a cold drink, and watch the rain wash the world clean from behind the glass.
It is in these forced moments of stillness, when time seems to stretch and slow down, that I feel the most inspired.
III. NEON AND SMOKE
When the rain finally surrendered, the city transformed entirely. The evening brought us to the iconic Lau Pa Sat hawker centre.
The contrast was beautiful. We shifted from the quiet isolation of the park to the bustling, sensory overload of the satay stalls, enveloped in smoke and the clatter of plates. It is a vibrant, chaotic energy that you can't help but let wash over you—even if, as an introvert, you prefer to just quietly observe it all over a comforting plate of noodles and roasted duck.
IV. FAMILIAR COMFORTS
The following day was a gentle embrace of continuous rain, turning our plans inward. It became a slow afternoon of wandering through the sleek, endless mazes of Orchard Road.
V. BITTERSWEET FAREWELLS
Leaving this city felt a little bittersweet. Singapore has been a beautifully complex mix of overwhelming energy and quiet, hidden green sanctuaries.
Thank you so much for joining me on this travel diary, and for sharing these slow, rainy moments with me. 🤍
