The Weir

Last Wednesday, I fancied something Irish so I had booked tickets for "The Weir" showing at the Wyndham's Theatre. The play first premiered in 1997, winning the Evening Standard, Critics' Circle and Olivier awards for Best New Play and establishing Conor McPherson as one of the greatest living playwrights. The cast included: Risteard Cooper, Brian Cox (he was so good!), Dervla Kirwan, Peter McDonald and Ardal O'Hanlon.

The story goes like this: On a cold, stormy evening in a remote Irish bar, four old friends gather, settling in for a lock-in to swap old tales as they laugh and drink (there was a lot of drinking involved!!) into the night. But when the arrival of a young female stranger, haunted by a secret from the past, challenges the men to impress her with their ghost stories, the night takes a dramatic turn more real and unsettling than any of them could have forseen.

The Stage
In some cases I was struggling a little bit with the accents. My Irish is not on top form you see! But the play and the actors were amazing and they offered lots of generous laughs. Exactly what I needed after a long day at work.
